Katarína Durčáková: A Slovak Girl’s World of Fashion

Katarína Durčáková is a Slovak fashion design enthusiast. She studies Applied Informatics but she has an indomitable spirit to study and work for fashion and that led her to pursue fashion designing as a career though studying fashion design in her country is not possible. She says fashion is her life and she creates some designs in her free time. Recently Kazi Purba had the opportunity to know about her love for fashion and her story. So, let us listen to her story and see her beautiful works directly from her. Fashionnovation wishes that she finds greater opportunities to study fashion and work as a fashion designer and add more beauty to this fashion world.

Hi,

I am Katarína from Slovakia and I want to tell you something about my story with fashion.

Last year I was in one Slovak brand for internship for three days. I designed a few designs with fashion designer from that brand and fell in love with this job.

Designing was my hobby in my free time, but I never thought that doing this work is so wonderful. In my free time, during my studies, I still continue designing. Because in my country we don’t have a lot of opportunities for this type of job, I create and still try to find some clients from foreign countries.

I design handbag for my foreign friend Ashley from UK and hoodie for his friend too, because they like my designs. Then I illustrated a few fashion illustrations for one woman, who is a seamstress. She likes my dolls with long legs. One of my biggest success I consider is T-shirt, which I created for one small Slovak brand BENATKI.

This T-shirt was created with a print and people still wear it. And this is why I love to do this job.

Figure 6: Katarína Durčáková’s graphic designing works 1.

After my studies I want to start my fashion career. I finish studies in a few months.

I know how to draw in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

I think, that I am a creative, responsible funny and I always go after my goals. I considered myself a very empathetic person with a positive approach to work. Let’s do it and never give up.

RebeccaRowe.ca: A women’s clothing brand on a mission to help women find impenetrable confidence

RebeccaRowe.ca: A women’s clothing brand on a mission to help women find impenetrable confidence

Rebecca, a former student at Pratt Institute and a graduate in fashion design at ESMOD Paris, now the founder of a rising fashion brand (RebeccaRowe.ca) named after her, is creating a trend of donning the women regardless of their body shape with the motto of “building confidence with clothes”. She is working for women’s fashion and with her brand, she is on a mission to establish her firm belief- “We’re DONE with the statistic that says, “80% of women hate what they see in the mirror.” Building impenetrable confidence instead.” Rebecca is on a mission to make every woman confident for what they are and how they look.

As a continuation of Fashionnovation’s search for unique, sustainable, rising brands, Kazi Purba, the Founder and President of Fashionnovation has interviewed Rebecca, the founder of the aforementioned brand. Let us hear about the venture directly from our today’s focus-Ms. Rebecca!

Ms. Rebecca, since our attachment with your insta account, we see your stories and learn a lot of your daily activities. Your works are really interesting and empowering which led us to know about you and your wonderful brand. Would you please tell us something interesting about yourself?

My brain instantly went to, 6’1” Canadian Virgo with a fashion brand and expert in visual identity. BUT, that’s boring. So something about myself? I am a caffeine addict, reformed fashionista, and horrible dancer and gym rat… not sure if that’s at all more interesting.

Rebecca's instagram account.

Rebecca’s instagram account.

Qute interesting it is! You created a brand called RebeccaRowe.ca. What’s the story behind your brand? What motivated you to establish that?

My brand started to help women build confidence. I wanted to design the clothing you grab when you’re speaking on stage, going on a first date, or start something you know is going to be hard.. After a few years of designing clothing like the ones I mentioned I realized I was much more passionate about helping women find confidence within their clothing. Since that realizeation I’ve been focused on Visual Identity: Using clothing as a tool for impenetrable confidence.

The motivation I have has always come from my clients. I’ve set trail marker goals along the way that give me a little dopamine hits when I accomplish them but the bulk of my motivation is my clients.

That’s amazing! What’s your product range?

I offer clothing wholesale. A capsule selection of 4-season garments made to order. I also offer mindset workshops to understand through your personal visual identity and how to use your clothing as a tool for success. And finally, I offer decluttering services, using the clothing you have in your wardrobe to define your personal style and letting go of the pieces that no longer serve you.

What special do you offer to your customers through your brand?

My brand is unique because I offer education on the way clothing affects you on a psychological level and give you the tools to use clothing for the greatest impact. Both on your body and in your closet.

Does your brand care about the environment and sustainability? How are you promoting sustainability with your works?

Every small brand cares about the environment in some way. The environmental debate within fashion is so vast that the designers who care have to pick an avenue that they support the most and work off their own unique set of values. I produce my garments to order and they are made in small batches to reduce waste.

What are your future plans with your brand?

In the next five years I’d like to take my brand across Canada, with boutiques carrying my line and myself offering talks and workshops in High Schools. Teaching boundaries with clothes is a great way to have boundaries in other areas of your life.

A Discussion on the Pattern Making Process for a Selected Dress

A Discussion on the Pattern Making Process for a Selected Dress

Why a Discussion on Pattern Making Process?

As we need patterns to form a final dress, we worked on making patterns according to our inspiration and selected dress style. The inspiration of the dress was ‘Breath of fresh air’- a post pandemic liberating expression when the world came out from their confined zones to take the breath of fresh air. As we have already discussed the season, customer profile, theme board, mood board and all the necessary information in our portfolio, we are just covering the process report of pattern.

Contents

  • Introduction
  • Some background of the work
  • A list of pattern pieces
  • Tops
  • Front bodice (right and left)
  • Back bodice (cut on fold)
  • Sleeve
  • Bottom Portion
  • Front skirt (layer 1 and 2)
  • Front skirt (layer 3)
  • Basic skirt (back)
  • Production pattern
  • Sewing details
  • Conclusion

Some background of the work:

A list of pattern pieces:

  • Front bodice (right)
  • Front bodice (left)
  • Back bodice (cut on fold)
  • Sleeve (1*2= 2)
  • Skirt (Front) Layer 1, Layer 2.
  • Skirt (Front) Layer 3
  • Skirt (Back) Layer 4

Size of the pattern: All the patterns are made using the measurement of the size 10 dummy.

Tops:

We have mainly done the patterns in two stages- 1. Basic block and 2. Production Pattern (by adding allowance to the basic block)

1. Basic Block

Front bodice (right and left)

The front bodice is mainly done using the basic bodice and a touch of dart manipulation.

Figure 1: Basic bodice (front). Photo courtesy: Kazi Purba

As our top is asymmetrical, we couldn’t just make the two parts of the front bodice same by cut and fold. That is why, we had to take the basic bodice, then cut and fold and then we had to perform dart manipulation.

Figure 2: The full part pattern with dart manipulation. Photo courtesy: Kazi Purba

Figure 3: Two parts (right and left) of the front bodice with darts. Photo courtesy: Kazi Purba

Back bodice (cut on fold)

For our dress, we kept the basic back bodice. The basic back bodice was made with the size 10 dummy measurement. This is done by cut and fold.

Sleeve

The sleeve is made according to the basic sleeve.

Bottom Portion

Front skirt (layer 1 and 2)

According to our design, we have developed the pattern into three layers for the front skirt.

The basic front skirt is firstly cut on fold and then it is customized according to the design of the dress using vary from curve ruler. Two patterns are made in this way. The layer 1 and 2. The layer 2 is 3 ich longer than the layer 1

The layer 3 is made by using the flipped version of the layer 2.

Basic skirt (back)

The back of the bottom part of the dress is developed using the basic skirt. It is used for cut and fold.

Production pattern:

Patterns are traced and made again using seam allowance.

Sewing details:

Side seam is done by chain stitch using Overlock machine.

And the others are done by Plain stitch using Single needle lock stitch machine.

Conclusion:

The patterns were made with reference to the basic blocks we created in our early pattern courses. They were traced and then customized accordingly. The basic patterns that we learnt to make, gave us a great opportunity to understand more complex patterns and thus we implemented them to make patterns for our designed dress. The previous actions (eg. Theme board, mood board, etc.) and further actions were taken accordingly to make the dress which we have covered in the portfolio.

The report was written by: Kazi Purba, the Founder and President of Fashionnovation, for his final year Portfolio project in Department of Textile Fashion and Design, Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX).
